Patient experience is a central component of healthcare quality and is essential for identifying operational improvements that drive better clinical and service outcomes. Despite its importance, a rigorously validated patient-reported experience measure (PREM) tailored specifically to optometry settings does not currently exist.
PROMinsight is working closely with the Australian College of Optometry (ACO) on the development of the first optometry-specific patient-reported experience measure (OPTO-PREM).
Through a long-term consultancy partnership, PROMinsight is providing comprehensive psychometric and methodological expertise to support the design, validation, and implementation of OPTO-PREM.
Our role includes:
– Psychometric expertise on item and content development
– Capacity building for ACO staff in qualitative research methods and PROM/PREM development
– Thematic analysis of patient interview transcripts and content refinement
– Rasch analysis of patient responses and full psychometric evaluation
– Ongoing consultation on study design, ethics applications, troubleshooting, and operational implementation
– Technical consultation on dashboard development and data visualisation strategies
“PROMINSGHT empowers us, as a public health–focused optometry organisation, to translate community-centered initiatives into innovative, higher-quality clinical eye care.”
– Dr Timothy Fricke, Director of Research and Education, Australian College of Optometry
Once finalised, OPTO-PREM will be hosted on PROMinsight’s secure cloud-based web application. The platform will enable real-time scoring and reporting to support scalable collection of PREM data, inform evidence-based service improvements, and allow comparative assessment across public and private optometric clinics.
This partnership represents an important step toward strengthening patient-centered care in optometry and advancing the systematic measurement of patient experience within community eye health services.
