The DRKA questionnaire was developed based on the Knowledge-Attitudes-Practice-Outcomes (KAP-O) Framework using a multi-phased, mixed-methods approach.
The 31-item DRKA questionnaire comprises separate Knowledge and Attitudes scales:
Knowledge
assesses patients’ understanding about the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy; treatment and management regimens and goals; and diabetic retinopathy symptomatology.
Attitudes
measures patients’ beliefs about disease development and progression, and onus of responsibility; and emotional reactions to diabetic retinopathy management experiences.

DRKA scores are positively correlated with education, suggesting that poor diabetic retinopathy-specific knowledge and attitudes may be amenable to improvement via educational interventions.
Higher Knowledge and Attitudes scores are associated with less difficulty accessing diabetic retinopathy-related information, suggesting Knowledge and Attitudes measured by the DRKA may be related to diabetic retinopathy-specific practice.
